Making Effective Applications

The Application Process

Do you have an idea about the type of job you want to pursue and are ready to go out there and get it? Then the first step in the process is likely to be making an application – this section will help you do this effectively.

The application is usually the first stage in the recruitment process and will often be the first contact you have with the employer.

This may be in response to an advertised job, or could be when you make a ‘speculative’ application to an employer.

The key point of the application is to get you invited to the next stage of the recruitment process – which might be an assessment centre and/or an interview (see sections later in toolkit).

Depending on the job and company the application will either be in the form of a Curriculum Vitae (CV) and cover letter or an application form.

When applying for internships and graduate jobs it is likely that you will encounter both these types of application, therefore in this section we will cover both in turn (open folders below to access content).

And remember, the Careers Service are here to help you with your applications, so when you are ready just get in touch!

Before starting to write an application however, it is important that you prepare properly….. Please see below the resources to help you
