The speed of the internet has affected many areas of our society in the modern world. Due to how fast information can get around because of the internet we have seen a rise of misinformation and fake news across social media platforms. The internet has also impacted our attention spans over the last ten years, which has had an impact on things such as the length of music. The internet has also seen the creation of cancel culture online, meaning the internet allows big groups people to quickly target people and attack them. These three sections have all been affect by the speed of the internet and will continue to do so as we head into the future.
Do you think that shorter attention spans in terms of the music industry could lead to less profit and money made in this area? Also, could this result in even more mass produced songs or could it cause artists to experience burn out?
Overall, I do think that the music industry will suffer in terms of how much money they can make even though there will be a few artists who benefit from shorter attention spans, but more artists will lose then artists who win. To answer you’re last point the increase in more mass produced songs is almost certain to happen, in terms of artists burning out I think the more experienced artist will be able manage themselves well enough especially because songs are shorter and don’t take as long to produce, however artists just coming into the industry may be more likely then ever before to suffer from burn out at some point in their career.
As university students, do you personally feel social Media has affected you? For example attention spans, having answers in seconds due to google. The impact it has on you as an individual ?
I think in one way it is useful, especially for doing assignments like these where I have unlimited access to sources which makes research a lot easier. An issue with this is it maybe reduces my work ethic and motivation, because of how easy it is to find information I might not do a thorough enough search for better quality sources. I think social media has affected me a lot because of how much I am online, and can be a distraction to more important tasks I could be doing.
You discussed the idea of shorter attention spans saying that the internet has evolved to inhabit this, with apps like tiktok. Do you think this means in the future we will watch these shorts videos therefore meaning movies, tv shoes and media like this will die out?
I don’t think TikTok and other similar platforms will entirely kill longer forms of media, we can see that the podcast format has become more popular, and Hollywood still rakes in millions from longer high-quality productions. However, I think it could impact how long people are willing to engage with this media, or how accessible it is e.g. the rise of streaming.
You mainly focus on the negatives of a shorter attention span, would you say there’s any positives?
Yeah even though shorter attention spans has generally had a negative effect on us, a positive that I can see from it is an app like Tik Tok which has been built around shorter attention spans as given the opportunity to many different people from a range of backgrounds the chance to make a living from producing shorter length content.
Do you think that the lifespan of tik tok as a social media has been increased or decreased because of the short term nature and speed of its content?
I would say that the life span of Tik Tok has increased due to the short nature of its content as it helps keep entertained however the lifespan of the app could change if other platforms take people away from tik tok by improving on the apps strengths.
