Technology plays a role in every aspect of society and continues to become more and more prevalent. Technology such as smart phones, most famously the iPhone, which was introduced in 2007, as well as tablets such as the iPad which was introduced latterly in 20101, have become a key part of daily life, although for the majority of people it hasn’t been something they’ve grown up with. However, children now are being introduced to these modern amenities from a very early age, in Australia 92% of parents confessed that their child had a tablet or iPad and 85% had a smartphone2. This report will investigate the effects of modern technology and how this will impact children and their futures, exploring concerns such as education, mental wellbeing, the Covid-19 pandemic amongst other topics.
I really like the presentation, a question I would have is does technology lead to more mental disorders like ADHD etcetera? How is it causing this?
Hi, it has actually been shown that technology can worsen symptoms of ADHD overtime on people who already suffer from the mental illness as reports have shown that students who were using Digital media frequently throughout the day were more likely to show symptoms like lack of attention, difficulty completing tasks and being more hyperactive and impulsive, I hope this has answered your question (:
Do you think that compared to the games with which children play, technologies like tablets can reduce the development of children because they have been in front of screen early ?
Hello, We have discussed this throughout our presentation the issue of how technology affects development within children but their has been many reports to say it does, from affecting core skills to social and communication skills within young children.
I really enjoy this topic! You mentioned the negative effect of screen time on children as young as toddlers. I was wondering what age you think children should begin to have access to technology of this kind?
I think it’s definitely up to personal preference but I would say children should have access to things like television and tablets from a young age for learning and developmental benefits but this should be limited and balanced with other activities like outdoor play.
I like this topic on iPad kids. However, the questioned I have is would the decrease in social skills and personal interaction have a negative result in these kids metal health due to these technologies?
Yes this would have a negative effect as a decrease in social skills may lead to heightened social anxiety, creating a further feeling of isolation. This could also be something that would likely worsen into adulthood in more complex social situations and may require treatment such as counselling.
What are some ways you think that this issue could be helped in order to avoid such serious negative impacts on kids social/communication skills and development?
I know a lot of parents give their children so much access to technology at home as it can keep them occupied and happy which partly reflects on this issue of iPad kids. Parents may not have as much time to spend with their kids doing other activities such as reading or playing due to work and/or perhaps can’t afford to send them to interactive clubs instead. Do you think maybe struggling parents could be offered more support somehow to help this issue in a way?
Do you believe that the introduction of technology from such a young age in the classroom will render useless any forms of learning and teaching?
