What is/are robotics? The word robot originates from the Czech word ‘robota’ which means forced labour or slave. Robotics is the use of machinery (robots) to perform and complete tasks that would regularly have been completed by human beings, this purpose lends example to the origin of the word and links it to its purpose in today’s world. This is what our group project aims around, and whether or not these constantly developing forms of technology are a good thing or not. We will explore different fields where robotics have an important part to play and look at whether or not the impact they are having is good or bad.

  1. Within war, the decision to kill is often made from a distance, the general ordering an action is rarely the person pulling the trigger
If a soldier can be compared to a drone as the vector for a third parties’ decision to Kill. How do you feel regarding the argument that drone warfare will not only save lives (the soldiers) but also avoid the impacts of killing on orders to the soldiers mental health.
As with a gun, the gun is not the killer the person pulling the trigger is, without the proxy human of the soldier, how accurate do you believe it to be that drones bring the Executive Decision Maker, their actions and inherent responsibility closer together

  2. As you mentioned the comparison to video games in the war section, could the use of robotic in war have the actual effect many feared from video games, desensitization to violence? As in video games, it is fake but when controlling a UAV those being targeted are human but are not really shown as such.
