Disconnect Nature Mood Boards

We were tasked on creating 4 mood boards for our latest project. One the board was a Mood board, and the other three were a combination of a mood board and a concept board for each of the three faculties of Social Digital.

These three boards include concepts for products/services from each of the faculties but with a twist. Each one had to reconnect the user to nature and had a couple of word which defined the product/service designed. The product design product had to encompass “Found objects”, the digital interaction p[product/app had to encompass “Camera and the Interior and environmental had to include “mobile structure”.

Mood Board

This is the first mood board, the upper left corner looks at the different forms of nature. The upper right looks at different ecological materials. The lower left looks at different colour pallets associated with nature and the lower right looks at three brands that have initiatives which helps the environment.

Product Design Board

The product design board which includes the key word “Found object” was designed as follow. The upper left looked at different products which were either made from secondhand items such as the coat hanger made from rolling pins or product which reconnected the user with nature in some way. My aim was not to bring the user to nature but to bring nature to the users familiar environment. The upper left is composed of images of found items such as pebbles, ropes that have drifted ashore, sticks and “rubbish” found in the streets. Those picture inspired me to design some of the potential products later on as they gave me inspiration.

The lower part of the board is mostly composed of my sketches and models. The left part is composed of some of my initial ideas. One of those ideas was a box which would have thin unusual shaped draws that could only fit certain shapes of stones. This would be so that the user could collect stones for skipping but only ones that could conform to the shape. This would encourage the user to go out to a rocky area to find the perfect stone that could fit in the draw. The second design is of a lamp-post on which vines would grow, this would bring the nature to the city. The lamp-post would creates more natures in cities and allow the passerby to fell more in nature around those. Another of the designs made was a bird feeder using only items that I salvaged on the beach of Tentsmuir. The seed would be placed in the water bottle and drop unto the orange cloth where a bird would eat from. This would bring a form of nature which is fauna to the user’s garden. The last design is a merely a flower pot made from a gutter found in the beach/marshy area of Tentsmuir.

The right of the lower part of the board is the more researched and developed idea of a chair. The chair would incorporate a vine that would grown out of it and tangle itself to the chair. This would allow Nature to grow within the chair. The aim of the chair is not to bring the user closer to nature but to bring nature closer to the user. I went into detail on the material of the chair which I believe could be recycled wood as it is a form of a found object and that it is also environmentally viable. I also went in depth about which type of vines can be grown indoor and why each vine is more useful/different than an other.

The chair was heavily inspired by Michel Bussien’s Growing chair which had a similar idea behind it. The idea of the chair is that of nature confined behind a man made construct manicured at the whim of the user and that despite that fact it can still proliferate despite it’s artificial boundaries.

Michel Bussien’s work rely heavily on that of nature surrounding us. He sees beauty in both man-made and natural construct as he consider’s them all to be the result’s of evolution. Bussien’s goal is to, through his research to better understand and question his part in the world, having in mind the ambivalence of being a man, as a creator and as a consumer in the nature that he forms a part of.
