The Nature Disconnect – Initial Concepts and Sketches

Reading Time: 3 Minutes

After done my extensive research, I decided to brainstorm a few ideas. No matter how ridiculous an idea was, I sketched it down in case it might be developed into a better idea.

The first page of my ideas included a few ideas which I had while making the mood boards the weeks before.

The ideas which are from last week are the Nature chair, the animal feeder and the plant pot in the upper left corner, the upper middle and the lower left corner respectively.

One of the new idea, the moss bag was conceptually created as an aim to carry nature around with the user as they went. It would act like a normal bag but would just be covered in either live moss or preserved moss.

The idea in the upper right corner is that of a self-sustaining ecosystem which would be created from found glass objects.

The idea just below that one is a simple one yet an effective idea I think which is to simply incorporate found rocks and shells in daily life objects such as drinking glasses, chairs and tables.

The second page has three main ideas. One of which is a plant related light. The first design is a ceiling hanging lamp with a vine growing around it. The second design is a potted plant which has a wire coiling around it connected to a bulb. The last lamp idea is a lamp shaped like a plant such as the sketch drawn which is suppose to mimic a rose.

The second set of ideas is about accessories and clothing made of nature. There are multiple shoe ideas, one of which is a shoe on which moss grows on, one which has a vine growing around it and the last one is a concept for a self-sustaining ecosystem in the shoe. The other two concepts are a shirt which moss grows on and a glasses which has moss growing on the frames.

The last set of ideas on this page are about creating water bottles which are made directly from bamboo or small trees. These are the concepts:

There are three ideas on the next page, starting with the one which spans all over the top of the page are ideas for nature relating coat hangers. For some reason, the weeping willow coat hanger really resonated in me as a good idea but I continued making more ideas in case I would find one which I think would be better.

The idea which takes most of the left side of the page is a different concept for curtains which would be entirely comprised of live nature such as bamboo and vines.

The last idea in the lower right corner is simply a wardrobe carved directly from the bark. The back of the wardrobe would just be the bark.

The next page is comprised only one idea which is the Stargazing fungus. The Stargazing Fungus would be a slab of plant and fungus growing on either a ceiling or a wall which during the day or during moments when there is light it would look like a normal wall/ceiling of plants but during the night and in the dark, the fungus would emit a glow which would mimic the night skies. I also developed it slightly into a more practical idea which would be to make strips of those glowing fungus to place besides auto-routes and night shifts zone (i.e. Hospitals) which would illuminate workers way during the night.

The fifth page is composed of different ideas for nature relating to jewellery.

In the upper left corner, I designed three different rings which could house nature. The first being a mini plant pot ring, the second a ring in which plants would grow around it (vine-like) and the third ring would just have a plant trapped in resin.

On the upper right, I created multiple designs for bracelets. The first design is of a plant in resin, the one below that is a hanging flowerpot on the necklace that the user would carry around. Going back to the first design, I developed it into the idea of just making a necklace out of resin with the plant trapped all around it. That gave me the idea to make a self-sustaining ecosystem as a bracelet. Another idea for a bracelet was a similar one to the second ring which is just having a live plant grow around the bracelet.

The ideas at the bottom of the page consist only of different designs for necklaces. Each design includes a variety of material to use as a necklace.

The first design uses sticks, the second feathers, the third and fourth uses shells and bones respectively.

Another idea aimed to capitalise at the imagery behind each season.

The last page of initial sketches and ideas continues the idea of a necklace but this time it incorporates a live plant in small receptacle hanging at the bottom.

I looked at the different potential receptacle and like the idea of using a lightbulb. This idea came to me thanks to my Artefact analysis. After the idea came, I did some basic development solving key issues such as which lightbulb to use and which plant to place in the bulb

This concludes the Initial sketches and Concept stage of the development.
