The Nature Disconnect – Research

Reading Time: 1 Minute

When I got given this task, I was mainly focused on continuing designing the product which I had designed in the weeks prior to being given this task. I still decided to do research in case a new idea would appear before me.

The first part of my research was about designers, I specifically looked into Sebastian ErraZuriz’s and Renée Lalique’s work.

Sebastian ErraZuriz is a self-proclaimed Artist-Designers who claims to not know the difference between both. Looked in-depth at his work because he is one of the few designers who had dealt with both found objects and nature within the same products.

This is the research that I got from looking into ErraZuriz;

The second Designer, Lalique, I researched because at this point I had the idea in my head of maybe doing something portable such as a bag, jewellery or clothing, and Lalique is famous in having done glassworks and jewellery related to Nature such as his famous Dragonfly Brooch.

These are the pages of research which I composed from looking at his work;

After looking at both, I decided to look into materials. I specifically looked more in-depth into one material which I decided would be glass and glassmaking as I had no prior knowledge to that material.

I also looked in less depth at other materials such as wood, hempcrete, bamboo, etc.

This is the material research.

What came after the material research was my artefact analysis. The object which I analysed became very useful later as it became the main part of my product. I also took the time to create a persona which was entirely fictional, except for the real-life cities and landmark cited in the persona.

These are both of them;

And for the final page of research, I looked at Nature related products which could inspire me to have different ideas for my product.

This the page:

These pages conclude my research which composes approximately two-fifths of my sketchbook. After done this much research, I felt that I was ready to start brainstorming for different ideas.
