Picture, Symbol, Icon – Week 3

Week 3

This week we have been tasked to create a two page layout for a magazine article and a web layout suitable for an iPad screen.

Out of the articles we have been given, I have decided to pick the design and sustainability one: “Lets start designing the future that gives us a future”. I feel very strongly about this subject so I thought I would be more passionate about this.

Magazine research

I went to the library and selected different magazines where I found different articles I found aesthetically pleasing but also flow well. I photocopied my favourite and analysed the layout thoroughly.

Article: Mackintosh down to a tea – Timothy Brittain-Catlin

Analysis

A six columned article created to draw your eye to the images, then to the text. The writer is in awe of Mackintosh’s work and wants you to share his enthusiasm. The two different fonts contract but also harmonise each other quite well, the tall title matches the parallel lines in the furniture design and it also relates to the artist’s style. The small round font in the body is neat and formal, much like the tearoom’s overall aura.

Image research

I have looked at different designs of potential “green” buildings that may be created in the near future. Both of which embrace a wide range of aspects whose aim is to enhance the so-called triple bottom line: social, environmental and financial performances. Research has shown that green buildings don’t necessarily cost more than conventional ones, especially when environmental strategies are integrated into the whole process right from the start. These two designs both follow these principles which is why I have chosen them for my article.

Building 1: Stefano Boeri Architecture

Magazine concepts

Concept 2: Sustainability of Design – C 2-160h261

I have organised the text into three columns, halfway down the page to allow white space therefore reducing the risk of the page looking too busy. I have added green lines following the outside of the body text leading the readers eyes to the text, then to the images. The pull quote, title and lines are the same colour to link all four together, making them more eye-catching to anyone just flicking through the pages. I have bled the largest image onto the left page to ensure the reader realises they are linked to the article.

Web Layout

I have trialled a portrait and landscape article fit for iPad screens. I personally prefer the landscape layout as it is clean and broken up a lot better, rather than being one block of text.
