Model representing thickness of walls

The walls of my final model will be 200mm. The shape of the structure already helps the structural integrity of the design so I feel these walls will be thick enough. These walls are also thick enough to provide enough shelter from the elements without taking much damage from harsh weather.

Viewpoint models

Since my shed is a place to reflect, I wanted to make some models representing the views that could be seen from my site.

I picked a site between both the river and the forest to help visitors find peace wherever they look.

Quick sketches

I created a simple shell of my model and glued an image of Tentsmuir to the back to create a little peephole to look at the surroundings of the site.

I further developed this model by printing images of Tentsmuir on acetate to make it work more effectively.

Sketch model experimenting with terrain

I used plasticine and bark to explore the similar contours of the surrounding terrain. This helped me think about my shed’s foundations since it is to be a “mobile” structure.

Site model to show the relationship with the surroundings

Sticks have been used to represent the surrounding trees on the site and shredded cardboard to represent the foliage between the footpath and beach.

Final model

Balsar wood and watercolour.

I have chosen for my shed to be made from wood as it can be locally sourced which is better for the environment.

The dark wood compliments the landscape.

The model was designed to capture and emphasise the different views situated in Tentsmuir, from the beach and forest. I feel this is important as it helps us appreciate what we have at “home” and how beautiful Scotland really is. Connecting people with nature is more important now than ever. Maybe if people appreciated Scotland they would be less likely to go on holiday, therefore reducing carbon emissions.

Rough sketch of storyboard concept

Storyboard

I created a storyboard to build a better narrative around my site and shed and to show the main purposes of the design.
