Font Design
This was my initial font design which I was born from simple pen strokes which I turned into a theme. These are very simplistic but do rather work, especially after I added the biro lines into the middle of the capital letters. My next steps at this point was to develop it into a more uniform style.
I wanted to add some inspiration into the process so I went online and found some geometric patterns which suited the styles I had previously gone for. I have now lost these original images but you can kind of make out the drawings I made of them. I wasn’t so keen on the first two but the last one, especially the A, were really interesting and I wanted to develop this shape into a whole font.
This was the really interesting A developed into a whole font and it was very hard to apply it to some letters, especially the ‘e’, ‘h’, ‘r’, ‘t’ and the ‘j’. However I tried and these are what I came out with. I was happy with some more than others. The next steps were to continue to develop this style.
This was the final font using this style from the ‘A’ and overall I like it. The letters down the bottom are reworks of some of the originals that I didn’t like. They are ready to cut out of foam and to start printing.
First print of all the letters.
I experimented with the fonts on some old pages from a magazine to get used to their aesthetic and how they might work in the real world. All of the messages were pretty ambiguous and random but I tried to make them all quite obscure in their meanings based on what is on the magazine page. For example, one of these says “Signs lead the wrong way!!” which is true and quite deep if you think about it but its pretty random. I really liked the overall style of the font and how it related to the magazine pages. It created quite a gothic and gothic theme with its monochromatic colouring and rough layout. The next step is to use them to make some final posters in a separate project.
