Hypovolaemic Shock

Hypotension secondary to fluid loss, eg. bleeding, severe dehydration.

NB – Hypotension due to hypovolaemia is a late sign, the compensatory tachycardia and peripheral  vasoconstriction have ceased to be effective

ABCDE assessment

Ensure high flow oxygen and IV access & urinary catheter in situ  (plus bloods sent)

Summon appropriate help urgently (e.g. relevant surgeon / medic/gynaecologist +/- anaesthetist)

If blood loss likely, ensure G&S converted to cross match
Replace intravascular volume with fluid – crystalloid, colloid or blood (O negative in emergency).

Definitive management if bleeding is the cause is likely to be theatre or endoscopy
