“For over a century, education has faced pressures to solve almost all of society’s problems, from the economy, to morality and increasingly as a form of therapy, there to ‘boost our self-esteem’. The technicalities of how to teach and how to learn appear to bog down a system and detract it from understanding that the essence of a good education is a focus on, indeed an obsession with subject knowledge and academic expertise. The core problem facing education is society’s loss of belief in the enlightenment, in knowledge and in humanity’s capacity and need to ‘dare to know’.”
