Reading Time: 2 minutes

For our third webinar on Thursday 28th September at 2pm we’re delighted to be joined by Dr Martin Compton from King’s College London.

As we approach a year since OpenAI took large parts of the World by surprise with the release of ChatGPT (text generator) following the earlier release of Dall-e 2 (image generator) there are still high levels of anxiety in much of higher education If not actual panic. Against a backdrop salt and peppered with competing visions of the future from an apocalyptic robot-controlled nightmare to an AI-assisted utopia we find ourselves confronted with huge levels of uncertainty about the future of work and study, about what the short and longer term impacts are really likely to be and how we might best tackle some of the challenges and engage with the opportunities. There are undoubtedly significant ethical, legal and sustainability issues to confront but in this session Martin will focus on the possibilities of generative AI in particular and argue that we have an obligation to our students to help them evolve sophisticated and critical understandings of the nature of these tools. We can do this only by engaging and recognising that the impact on some of our ways of working in HE may have to change quite significantly. The session will include some examples of generative AI assistance that are anything but ‘churning out an essay’ and ask you to consider how you or your students might use similar approaches in your disciplinary areas.

Dr Martin Compton joins us from King’s Academy at King’s College London. He is Head of Programme, Module and Assessment Design and is currently leading across the College on all things Generative AI from policy to supporting funded research projects and the production of a Generative AI in HE MOOC.
