Our University is full of talented, unique and inspiring students. Each year the TILT team offer a placement to one of our postgraduate Medical Art students for the chance to develop their portfolio and create a wide range of learning materials for our undergraduate medical programme. This year we had the pleasure of accepting Rachel Bessell; a skilled, motivated and passionate individual who, in just under 3 months, created a range of fantastic educational illustrations.
“Hi, I’m Rachel! I’m a medical artist with a passion for making science and medicine accessible to all. Originally a neuroscience graduate, I rediscovered art during the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequently traded in my pipettes for paintbrushes and undertook the MSc Medical Art at the University of Dundee. As a result, I have come full circle from using medical illustrations to study to being the one who creates them.”

Lifelong Learning – A Wimmelbuilder Illustration
Designed to engage our students with a game of ‘how many can you spot?’ Rachel’s illustration details a variety of everyday scenarios relating to lifelong learning. Designed to encourage interactivity and refresh learning materials, students responded very positively to the illustration. The illustration is part of the Lifelong Learning PowerPoint presentation.

Clinical Scenarios – Integrated Teaching Illustrations
Part of a set of seven in collaboration with the Medical Artist, Rachel worked on three scenarios – a triadic consultant with an elderly patient, an awkward discussion between two colleagues, and an unsure patient. With use of expression, iconography and colour, these illustrations are designed to generate discussion and emotional impact during the clinical scenario sessions with our year 5 students.

Anatomical Illustration – Jugular Vein Anatomy
Requested by Dr Rosalind Harpur in Clinical Skills, this illustration will be used as a teaching aid and will feature as part of a bank of new bespoke images for the University of Dundee, featuring diversity and representation as a main focus.
Thank you to Rachel for producing fantastic work and we look forward to seeing her future development!
