Hypersensitivity reactions are a group of conditions in which the immune system, which normally serves a protective role, has a harmful effect. Both allergies and many autoimmune diseases fall under the umbrella of hypersensitivity reactions. Hypersensitivity reactions are classified into four types and this short video introduces each of these in turn, providing examples and summarising their underlying aetiology.

Screen capture of animation showing pathogens and antigens

This animation was created for use by Dr Richard Oparka during his lectures. It needed to outline the four main categories of hypersensitivity reactions, the main effectors of each type, and examples of where they occur.
