Project Title: ENT Videos with Animation and Illustrations
Project Sponsor: Richard Green, Honorary Senior Lecturer
TILT Medical Artist: Eve Laws
As part of a larger clinical skills video re-recording project, a series of ENT examination videos were requested for use in teaching 2nd and 4th year medical students. These videos were to demonstrate the correct examination procedure, using an actor as the patient.
A combination of real footage and illustration/animation was strategised and delivered. The illustration/animation combination aids the students in visualising the anatomy that can not be directly seen on the ‘patient’, as well as helping the students to recall important structures as the examinations progress.
The animation was particularly useful for the Rinnes and Weber test in the otology examination video. It is a difficult examination to describe and students have fed back that they have always found it hard to understand. By visually guiding the students through the types of sound conduction with animated effects, the students are now able to understand the procedure more than ever before.
