Overview
Project Title: Intercellular Junctions – 3D Model
Project Sponsor: Dr Sadia Khan, Lecturer, Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification
TILT Medical Artist: Eve Laws
Responsible for adhering cells together, intercellular junctions are a complex series of structures that can be difficult for students to visualise, particularly the band-like connections. 2D illustrations are plentiful, but often cause confusion as the extent that the junctions wrap around the cells cannot easily be visualised.
The creation of a bespoke 3D model depicting epithelial intercellular junctions was requested for both medical and anatomy student teaching. The model was to be hosted online with zoomable and rotational functions, and labelled structures for undergraduate students to examine. As a teaching aid this model would provide an alternative, interactive view of intercellular junctions for undergraduates.
