October is Black History Month! This year, the University of Dundee has a theme of Embracing and Celebrating Diversity. There is a range of events occurring throughout the month as part of the celebration, read below to find out more.

Embracing & Celebrating Diversity – Launch of Black History Month 2024

Book your place for this evening event that celebrates the diversity of our community through performances, a talk by Cat Dunn, music, fashion and food. Takes place in Bonar Hall on October 2nd, bookings required.

Embracing & Celebrating Diversity – Student Photo competition

Students are invited to submit photos of their interpretation of the theme: Embracing and Celebrating Diversity. Entries will be displayed in a virtual gallery, and will be submitted to a special collection to the University of Dundee’s archives.

Festival of the Future – The Two Coins: Meditations On Trade

Come to a film screening of ‘The Two Coins: Meditations on Trade’, created by Graeme Mortimer Evelyn, a multi-media visual artist and curator. The film is on Transatlantic slavery and its long-term global influences. This event is taking place at 17:00 on October 11th at Abertay University , bookings are required. The film will also be playing throughout the month of October in the Matthew Building, Level 5, DJCAD and at the DJCAD reception.

Dundee and Empire

Visit the Dalhousie Building Foyer to view the poster exhibition exploring Dundee’s connections with the Empire and colonialism through the linen and jute trades in the Caribbean and South Asia.

Dundee & Empire Exhibition tour

The organisers of the Dundee and Empire exhibition will be giving an informal guided tour exploring the topic. Join them on October 14th at 13:15, booking required.

Embracing and celebrating diversity in health professional education and practice: a lived experience from Nigeria to Scotland

Attend this School of Health Sciences Diversity Points webinar about a career journey from Nigeria to Scotland and adjusting to a new cultural context and healthcare system. This online event takes place on October 15th from 13:00 to 14:00, registration required.

Let’s Network, Collaborate and Plan Research – BAME Researchers

This event, in collaboration with the British Academy Early Career Researchers Network is a career development day bringing together early career researchers (ECRs) to celebrate the contributions of researchers from Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds. The day will involve lightning talks from BAME-researchers, keynote speeches by BAME academics and small group sessions to plan collaborative research projects on issues related to BAME-ECRs. Refreshments and lunch will be provided. This event takes place Wolfson Lecture Theatre, Queen Margaret Building on October 16th, from 10:00 to 16:30, registration required.

Breaking the Chains

This event is a walking tour by Local History librarian Erin Farley and University of Dundee Museum Curator Matthew Jarron about the places in Dundee connected to Transatlantic and American slavery. Learn about the role slavery played in Dundee’s economy and visit sites where previously enslaved people came to speak publicly about their experiences. The tour leaves from the Tower Building on October 16th at 14:30, booking required.

Show Racism the Red Card

Come show your support for Show Racism the Red Card, an anti-racism charity at the annual Staff vs Students football match in collaboration with the Sports Union. This year’s event will include a sports day before the match, with games like wheelbarrow races, egg and spoon races, and duck duck goose! Meet at 12:30 at Campus Green on October 18th for the walk to Riverside for the sports day before kickoff at 15:00. Afterparty will be at 19:00 at Liar. No bookings are required for this event.

Diversity, Discrimination and cracking the glass ceiling

Come to the SMED inaugural annual Jainti Dass Saggar Lecture by Dr Ramesh Mehta, Founder and President of British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin. The talk celebrates the scientific advances and successful careers of our colleagues from underrepresented backgrounds. Refreshments will follow the talk. This event will take place at the Gannochy Trust Lecture Theatre, Ninewells Hospital on October 22nd at 14:00, RSVP requested.

School of Business Round Table Discussion

This event provides a platform for Black researchers to showcase their work and to celebrate their research achievements. It will also be an opportunity for participants to share their research, discuss career-related challenges, and receive valuable feedback from fellow academics. It will take place on October 23rd at 14:00 in room 4.08, Scrymgeour Building, no booking required.

Black History Month – Celebrating Women’s Achievements

This panel discussion with current and past University students will discuss the challenges faced by, and celebrate the achievements of, BAME women with the theme of Overcoming Challenges and Rising Above. This even takes place on October 29th at 17:00 in Lecture Theatre 2, Dalhousie Building, registration required.

Woven Together Dundee

Woven Together Dundee is a blog in collaboration between the University of Dundee Museums and the Abertay Historical Society that explores the history Black, Asian and minority ethnic people in Dundee.
