This week’s Flashback Friday Film Festival from the University Archives is all about ‘Discovering the Future’ in 1991. Introduced by Professor Michael Hamlin, Principal of Dundee from 1987-1994, the film focuses on the research strengths of the University in the early 1990s. We hear from Professor Philip Cohen about the world-leading biochemistry work which continues in the School of Life Sciences today. Professor Jack Dinsdale, Professor of Mechatronics, describes the innovative partnership with NCR, the manufacturers of cash dispensers then based in Dundee, and Professor Bryan Williams of the department of Social Work discusses the early use of computing technology and the building of the White Top Centre, a day care centre for young adults with profound disabilities.
Professor Hamlin died earlier this year so it is appropriate to remember the achievements of the University during his time here. More information about the former Principal, particularly his role in saving the Dental School, can be found at https://www.dundee.ac.uk/stories/death-former-principal-michael-hamlin
