The 1835 Moon Hoax was perhaps one of the greatest “fake news” stories of the 19th Century. A New York newspaper published a series of articles revealing the truth about life on the moon. Allegedly reprinted from an Edinburgh publication, they were intended in part as a satirical of the work the Dundee astronomer, Rev Thomas Dick.

As a part of the Being Human Festival, Dundee University will be holding an online event on the 13th of November at 6pm to explore the history of the Moon hoax which will also act as an opening for a new art and designs exhibition Moon Beams.

A series of short presentations will be given by Museum curator Mathew Jarron, a local astronomer Brian Kelly and Dr Keith Williams from the University of Dundee, as well as many more.
