This past month Dr Martine Van Ittersum, Senior Lecturer in History took part in an International Roundtable discussion on the Banadanese Massacre of 1621. Dr Ittersum will also be appearing in a series of two programmes written and presented by Billy Kay which celebrate Scotland’s historic links with the Flemish and Dutch
people. They aired on BBC Radio Scotland on the 2nd April and the 5th April at 11.30 am but they are
now available for 1 month on BBC Sounds.

The brutal conquest by the Dutch East India Company of the Banda Island, all for the sake of controlling worldwide production of nutmeg and mace.
Around 60 people from all over the world participated in the online call, including modern-day inhabitants of the Banda Islands.
