The Market and Innovation Society successfully hosted its first market event, drawing in more than 10 enthusiastic stall owners on 29/3/2024 inside DJCAD Canteen. The event was not only a financial success, generating over £700 in profit for the students, but also received a 100% satisfaction rate from stall owners who are eager to return.

Inspiration and Mission:

The idea for our society was inspired by a winter market I participated in, recognizing the potential for students to earn income from their creations while gaining valuable industry experience. With this vision in mind, we established a society to harness university resources and like-minded individuals to create a platform for students to increase their income and showcase their talents.

Committee Contributions:

Our committee members played pivotal roles in the event’s success. Event Manager Anna ensured smooth operations during the event, while Secretary Rosie handled communications and Ellen curated engaging social media content. Kuba, our Treasurer, managed the financial aspects of the society. We deeply appreciate their dedication, especially during a busy deadline week.

Venue and Organization:

We identified an unused space behind the canteen with ample room, transforming it into a monthly student market. Despite having only two weeks to prepare after confirming the venue, our committee demonstrated remarkable efficiency and professionalism. Visual elements like posters were created, and leaflets were distributed across the art school with the support of our Vice President, Riely. We reached out to various departments, achieving a decent turnout rate and perfectly filling the venue space.

Future Plans:

With the success of our first market, we have secured a budget to enhance support for our students. Plans include organizing more diverse events beyond markets, providing resources for stall owners, and fostering a stronger social community. We anticipate becoming more well-known with each event, attracting more members and securing the necessary budgets for our continued success.

Looking Ahead:

Following this achievement, our sights are set on securing a better and larger venue for bigger events while maintaining our original monthly art market. We are in the process of booking a venue for Freshers’ Week, extending the opportunity to all UoD students to set up stalls and engage with the public. Additionally, we are seeking collaborations with other universities and organizations, such as Abertay University or the V&A Museum.

Conclusion:

We believe that with DJCAD’s high quality and reputation, more art students should have the opportunity to promote their work and prepare for the industry. Our society aims to provide the necessary support and guidance for students embarking on their entrepreneurial journey, helping them establish themselves in the business world.
