Join the Music and Makaton event every Monday evening at 7.30-8.30 pm, to enjoy a fun and relaxed evening of singing and signing along to popular songs and stories. You do not need to be a singer or a musician to take part, you just need to be enthusiastic to participate.
The sessions are run by Sharon Tonner-Saunders, a lecturer from the School of Education and Social Work and two third year student primary teachers (Sophie Neil and Georgia Fullerton). Alongside the therapeutic musical benefits of taking part in the group, the benefits of learning how to sign using Makaton enable members to develop their skills in communicating using simple signs to create an inclusive environment for those with communication difficulties. Sharon also uses Makaton signing and music to connect learners from around the world to preserve their linguistic identities in her award winning project called Hands of the World.
