CreateSpace: Being creative in the virtual space
The Library and Learning Centre (LLC) CreateSpace was set up in Summer 2019 as a space within the Main Library dedicated to helping all students try something creative, learn a new skill or simply take a break from their academic work. The CreateSpace proved a real success with students during its first year of opening, with students enjoying the freedom to experiment with creative projects without the prohibitive upfront costs associated with materials and equipment.
Indeed, two of our inspirational CreateSpace Student Helpers took part in Discovery Days 2021 explaining the benefits of involvement with the CreateSpace and its potential continued development into the areas of interdisciplinary teaching, sustainability and mental wellbeing:
Unfortunately, the pandemic has stalled plans for building distinct creative communities within the physical space and sadly the CreateSpace is currently closed under COVID restrictions. However, we are experimenting with some online workshops this semester to provide inspiration for affordable creative activities which can be attempted from home:
- Anyone can draw! – Thursday 11th February 5-6pm – Ever been told you can’t draw or too embarrassed to share your doodles? We will prove everybody can draw and develop their own unique style in this session.
- Visible mending – Thursday 25th February 5-6pm – Turn your tears into a work of art in this session looking at how with a little bit of creativity your clothing repairs can become a feature.
- Subversive stitches –Thursday 11th March 5-6pm – Be inspired to use cross stitch and embroidery to promote the messages your care about.
- Knitting for Newbies – Thursday 25th March 5-6pm – Learn the basics needed to get started with knitting and how to get involved with the active knitting community.
