Meet the Editorial Board: Professor Alex Gitterman, University of Connecticut, USA

Professor Alex Gitterman is a Professor of Social Work and former Director of the Doctoral Program at the University of Connecticut School of Social Work. Previously he was on the faculty of the Columbia University School of Social work. Alex has edited The handbook of social work practice with vulnerable and resilient populations, Third edition, (2014) and co-edited Mental health and social problems: A social work perspective (2010); The encyclopedia of social work with groups (2009); and Mutual aid, vulnerable and resilient populations, and the life cycle, Third Edition, (2005). He has also co-authored The Life Model of social work practice: Advances in theory and practice, Fourth Edition (2021); and Public health social work in maternal and child health: A forward Plan (1986).

Alex is the Editor of a series for Columbia University Press about Helping Empower thePowerless. Alex has published articles on social work practice, evidenced-guided practice, social work with groups, field instruction, supervision, organizational behavior, and teaching. He also directed a federally funded project on the training of social workers for leadership in the field of maternal and child health from 1980 to 1997. Alex served as the President and on the board of the Association for the Advancement of Social Work with Groups, an international professional organization. For the Council on Social work Education, Alex served as a commissioner on the Commission on Education and Curriculum Innovation and as chair for the Group Work Symposia. He currently serves on the Planning Committee for the International Interdisciplinary Conference on Clinical Supervision He serves on the editorial boards of the following journals: Clinical Social Work Journal, Clinical Journal of Supervision; Journal of Human Behavior in the Social Environment; Social Work, Social Work with Groups; Social Work in Health Care; Reflections: Narratives of Professional Helping, and Teaching in Social Work.

Alex’s awards include Council on Social Work Education Significant LifetimeAchievement Award and the International Association for the Advancement of Social Work with Group’s Lifetime Achievement Award.
