In this article, Immersed in the transitioning higher education sector, we explore how there’s been a marketisation of higher education in the UK, particularly in England.
We see how UK higher education is hyper connected, and not only is it competing internally, but also in an international market, and recently, with the introduction of the Office for Students and the use of new metrics such as continuation, completion and graduation, and the proxy for the quality of teaching and a range of other metrics which allows comparability. And this drive for data has led to a sense of constant change, coupled with hyper connectivity.
Therefore, we see the higher education sector as somewhat of a fictional being. And thus we’ve utilised the Multiple and Multi-dimensional model put forward by Jindal-Snape and utilise that within the context of higher education; under constant change. Undergoing constant transition with transitions aren’t necessarily fully realised before this, then another change or transition.
We look at the impact that that’s had on staff and students and discuss some of the ramifications of this metrification and datafication.
